Mother’s Day card and holiday history
In the middle of May, Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. This holiday celebrates mothers, and all their hard work and dedication to those around them.
The first public support of Mother’s Day was made in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe, the author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” She wrote the Mother’s Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament, in relation to the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. Howe failed in her attempt to get formal recognition of Mother’s Day. It was in 1907 that Ann Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a movement for approving Mother’s Day as a national holiday.
It is customary on Mother’s Day for a son or daughter to visit their mother, give her a gift and to spend some quality time with her.
