Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
Control intermission sequences:
Much like the Codec transmissions, you can also pressL or R to zoom in during an intermission. The harderyou press, the more the zoom. You will hear a gunshot. While holdingthe button, use the Right Analog-stick to move the view.Also during certain parts of some intermissions are sections whereit looks like you are viewing the scene through a camera or binoculars.You can use the zoom feature with these as well, and the onscreendistance or zoom indicators will increase realistically the moreyou zoom in. This also can be done at the beginning of the game,before pressing Start.
Control title screen:
Press White to hear a gunshot and see a flashat the title screen. Use the Right Analog-stick at thetitle screen to change the background color.
Control Codec sequences:
Press the L or R to move the faces. PressL for a negative response such as "No way" or"Why don't you do it?". Press R for positiveresponses. The responses change depending on who you are talkingto. You will also hear who they really feel about their women.
Press Y to fast forward a Codec transmission.
Hold L + R and press Start + Selectduring game play.
Successfully complete the game. The digital camerawill be available when a new game is started.
The digital camera is locate in Strut E Shell 1. Go to the bottomof the screen and locate the platform with three red lights onit. Climb up onto it and equip the Z.O.E. Box. When the conveyorstops, press Action to climb on. You will be taken to anotherroom. Press Action again to get off and retrieve the DigitalCamera. Exit the room in the same fashion.
Stealth, Bandanna and Wig bonuses:
Complete the following goals to get the Stealth (invisibility),Bandanna (unlimited ammo for Snake), and the Wig (unlimited ammunitionfor Raiden). To get Stealth and Bandanna, complete the Tankermission three times on three different difficulty settings (allon the same saved file) and get 120 dog tags (40 on each difficulty;you can miss some because there are 42 on very easy, 43 on easy,and 48 on normal). To get Stealth and Wig, complete the plantthree times on three different difficulty settings (all on thesame save file) and get all the dog tags.
Successfully collect 170 dogtags and the Orange Wig will be unlockedfor the Plant chapter. The Orange Wig gives you unlimited grip.
Alternately, successfully complete the game under the hard difficultysetting with no rations. If done with Snake, the Bandana willbe unlocked. If done with Raiden, the Wig will be unlocked.
Costume and weapon bonuses:
Complete all of the Snake Tales twice. Complete 100%of all VR missions. Then, complete the entire game under any difficultysetting. Start a new game with the save file that was completed.You should now have access to Snake's Tuxedo and Metal GearSolid costumes in the items list. The M4 and AK7 rifle willalso be placed somewhere within the Tanker.
After completing the game two times, Snake and Raidenwill be wearing sunglasses.
The second time you play the game, Raiden will notonly wear sunglasses but when you pull out the SOCOM or any othergun, he will be wearing a watch on his left hand in first personview.
European Extreme difficulty:
Successfully complete the game under the normal difficultysetting.
Boss survival mode:
Successfully complete Sons Of Liberty under any difficultysetting.
Successfully complete bomb disposal mode, hold up mode(alternative missions), and eliminate mode to unlock photographmode in the VR Missions.
Casting theater option:
Successfully complete Sons Of Liberty under any difficultysetting.
Successfully complete 50% of the VR missions as Raidento unlock Ninja Raiden in the VR Missions.
Successfully complete 100% of the VR missions as Raidenand Ninja Raiden.
Successfully complete 50% of the VR missions as Snake.
Successfully complete 100% of the VR missions as Pliskin.
Metal Gear Solid 1 Snake:
Successfully complete 100% of the VR missions as Snake,Pliskin, Tuxedo Snake, Raiden, Ninja Raiden, and Raiden X.
Alternate ending sequence:
Successfully complete a Snake Tale to unlock the M9.Begin game play and use M9 to stun the Bosses instead of killingthem to view an alternate ending sequence.
Hint: Plant chapter: Angry Rose:
When you are covering E.E. with the sniper rifle, shota lot of birds. They will contact you on the CODEC. The next timeyou try to save, Rose will get mad at you.
Hint: Plant chapter: Emma comments:
When you are sniping the guards to get Emma acrossthe oil fence, get Snake to snipe for you. Use the directionalmicrophone to listen to Emma talk to herself. She says thingsabout how she thinks Raiden is cute.
Hint: Plant chapter: Shaver:
You can get the shaver in the Plant chapter only underthe extreme difficulty setting. You will give it to Snake later,who will shave his beard near the end of the game.
Hint: Plant chapter: Waking the President:
In the Plant chapter in the Extreme and European Extrememodes, you have to wake up the President. To do this, throw astun grenade at the wall directly in front of the elevator. Whenhe wakes up, go to the wall and put your back against it. Then,find a location where there are no crates and keep knocking. Whenhe gets there, run to the place where you have to shoot out theNikita. That will distract him and move him from the electricbox.
Hint: Plant chapter: Bird talk:
Go to B2 of the Shell 1 Core. Eliminate all guardsand find the caged parrot. You can teach it to say "You mustbe Ames" by pointing the Directional Mic at it and pressingAction several times. Firing different weapons at the birdwill also cause it to say new things. For example, Coolant Spraywill cause the bird to say "This sucks".
Hint: Plant chapter: Boxes:
In the strut where the boxes are located, you can puton a box and go to the bottom. Once there, you climb on the boxdelivery port and wait for the conveyer belt to stop. Dependingon what box you have on, the belt will take you to where thoseboxes are supposed to go. For example, the orange boxes will taketo the cafeteria.
Hint: Plant chapter: Sick guard:
When you are in the Shell 1 Core listening to Ocelotand Solidus using the directional microphone, point it to theleft of them (just to the right of the flag pole). You will hearthe same guard from Metal Gear Solid on the toilet. Hemakes some funny comments and says what happened to him and howhe ended up at the Big Shell.
Hint: Tanker chapter: Marines in boxershorts:
You can make the Marines in the Tanker chapter appearin their underwear in the room where Metal Gear is being held.Press White two or three times when start at the titlescreen then select the normal difficulty setting. When you getto where you have to take pictures of Metal Gear, the nearby marineswill not be wearing their pants.
Hint: Tanker chapter: Confuse the Marines:
In any one of the holds, sneak up behind one of theMarines on the corner of the group. Keep pressing B (punch)until he flips forward. He will then hit two or more Marines,and this will begin a chain reaction of Marine-flips. In the end,more than half of the marines will end up looking around withquestion marks over their heads, wondering what just happened.Wait a few seconds and they will return to their ranks. You cando it again. Note: Having the stealth makes this a lot easier,as they cannot see you when they get up and start looking around.
Hint: Tanker chapter: USP Suppresser:
After completing the game once and saving it, starta new game with the saved data. On the Navigation Deck after thebattle with Olga, go up the ladder to where you would normallyget the Thermal Goggles. On the middle platform, before the goggles,should be a USP Suppresser on the left. You can now equip theUSP with it and muzzle the gunfire for the rest of the Tankerchapter.
After you complete the Tanker chapter three or four times, youcan find the USP Suppresser on the navigational deck after youdefeat Olga. It is located on the second floor on the lookout,near where the thermal goggles are found.
Hint: Tanker chapter: Secret passage:
In the Holds 2 room, go all the way to the left tofind a hatch. Open it, and you will climb down into a small area.Crouch and go through the vent on the ground. You will eventuallysee a gun clip fall through and a man will start talking. Hisshadow will be on the ground. Wait there until his shadow leaves,then move through the area. After you get past that, you willreach an opening and an intermission sequence will begin. Afterit ends, crawl through a vent on the right side of the small room.After you crawl through, you will find a ladder. Climb up theladder, and it will lead you to a small perch. Look down at thebottom of Metal Gear RAY, and you will see Ocelot standing there.He will then go away. You can keep doing this and experiment withthings to do with Ocelot.
Hint: Tanker chapter: Vulcan Raven actionfigure:
Immediately when you enter the engine room, there isa small Vulcan Raven figure standing on the ground with a flashlightshining on it. If you shoot it, it will start shooting very smallballs around and will repeatedly say "Raven!", or somethingsimilar.
Hint: Tanker chapter: Easter Island head:
When you are in the room with Emma's parrot, crawlaround underneath the computers and electronics. You can finda small statue of a Easter Island head.
Hint: Tanker: Hidden intermission sequence:
In the second room with all the Marines before theMetal Gear room are two projectors and two screens. Approach thefirst projector. Then, press Y(7).
Hint: Defeating the MG-RAY Boss:
Note: This can be done under the hard or extreme difficultysettings. When the battle starts, immediately shoot the middleRAY unit in the hand then its mouth. Before the missile hits itshead, quickly take aim at the right one's knee and start tappingX. Also shoot its head. Once again, before the missilehits, quickly aim over to the far left RAY's knee and start tappingX. Repeat this for the center RAY, then the right again,then the left again. You should be able to keep doing this untilall of their life bars are below half. Eventually, one of themwill start firing missiles at you and the others will follow.They will keep firing until you manage to squeeze a shot in onone. The best time to do this is when one of them opens up withits machine gun (or whenever you think you have the time). Whenone of them jumps onto the platform, stay close, but far awayenough that you cannot be stepped on. The exact center of thearena is recommended. The RAY on the platform will rear its headback and shoot its laser at you. When it rears its head back,immediately roll to the left or right. It should miss if donecorrectly. You will have a good five seconds to hit it in theknee and then the mouth (or just the mouth if you are quick enough,since it is already open). Keep doing this, but make sure youdo not get close enough for it to step on you. Once again, theexact center of the arena gives just about the right distance.Also, the RAY may also periodically pause to do its Godzilla-likeroar. When it does this, you will have a good opportunity to getoff a knee and mouth combo on it. Keep doing this for each RAYthat jumps up onto the platform.
Hint: Defeating Solidus:
In the final battle with Solidus, before he sheds thetentacles from his suit, you can run off the side of the buildingand hang on the ledge. Solidus will come over and say "Whatare you doing?" and go for an overhead double sword strike.When he does this, press the button to climb back up and Solidus'sattack will go through you, giving you a free shot at him. Thiscan also be done to avoid his homing missiles, but you have toclimb back up at just the right time to avoid all four.
Hint: Defeating Vamp:
As soon as the fight begins, run over to Vamp and getas close as possible to him without falling into the water. Quicklyequip the stinger missile launcher and begin to constantly bombardhim with missiles. Tap the button as fast as possible to defeathim in about fifteen seconds.
Under the extreme difficulty setting, at the beginning of thebattle when Vamp bows, shoot him with the Stinger. You might beable to do this two or three times if you are lucky. As soon ashe goes underwater, shoot the lights out quickly before he comesback up. When he first goes underwater, he will come back up afterabout one sixth of his oxygen is used, unless of course you shoothim while he is underwater (which will deplete his oxygen aftera few shots). If you shoot the lights, you will most likely nothave enough time to shoot him while he is underwater. Throughoutthis battle, Vamp will alternate between standing above you whilethrowing knives at you, and chasing you around on the catwalktrying to slash at you. He always starts the battle by going aboveyou while throwing knives. When Vamp throws knives while aboveyou, wait until he starts throwing them in rapid succession. Whenhe does this, try to anticipate his movements so you will endup directly beneath him once he finishes throwing the knives.As soon as he stops, fire repeatedly with the Stinger. You shouldbe able to hit him about three or four times. When he goes underwaterafter throwing knives at you from above, place a Claymore mineon the catwalk to the right as you enter the room. Then, standon the southern-most catwalk in the room as you enter. Stand tothe right of the line that is in the middle. When Vamp comes up,he will run directly into the Claymore, causing him to go backunder. When Vamp's life bar reaches about one third, he will changehis knife throwing pattern. He will throw two knives in rapidsuccession, then pause for a second or two before throwing a thirdknife. He will do this three times before going underwater. Withthis knife throwing pattern, it will be difficult to hit him.You may want to dodge his knives rather than try to attack himduring this time. If you do choose to attack him, do so by gettingyour Stinger ready before he comes up. When he comes up, shoothim immediately when he lands. This can be dangerous because youwill be open to attack from his knife-throw if you do not hithim. if you do not attack him, a good strategy to avoid gettinghit is to run in circles while moving in a zig-zag pattern. Also,do not let him get close to you with your back to him. If thishappens, you are very likely to be hit. Once Vamp's life is downto approximately one tenth, he will change his attack pattern.He will move around very quickly and occasionally throw five orsix knives simultaneously. The best way to hit him during thisstage is to track him with the Stinger and fire just as he isabout to throw knives at you (or any other time when you thinkyou can hit him). This last stage is the toughest; you will haveto be very quick not to get hit. Try to make sure you have fullrations for this battle (especially the last part).
Hint: Avoiding alert mode:
When a patrolling guard sees you, run into a room wherethe screen goes black and tells you where you are. The game willnot go into alert mode, evasion mode, or caution mode.
Hint: Easy radio shots:
To knock out an enemy's radio easily, when you holdthem up shoot it (on the belt to the right of their back). Alsoshoot an enemy's radio when they are knocked out to prevent themfrom calling for help if they wake up.
If you shoot at an enemy's radio when he is calling for backup,it will be destroyed and you will have a better chance to killhim. This also works if you throw a Chaff Grenade at a enemy'sradio.
Hint: Easier Pull-ups:
Instead of doing half an hour of pull-ups, go to aplace with two rails at the top and bottom, evenly lined up. Then,do the hang-drop-catch ten or twenty times to get a fast level2 and 3 grip.
Hint: Automatic rations:
Equip a ration icon. When your life reaches zero, theration will automatically restore part of your life so you donot have to.
Hint: Deactivating C4 bombs:
When deactivating the "Baby C4 bombs", thelast one for the very easy and easy difficulty settings is underthe submarine hanging from the ceiling in the bottom of StrutA Shell 1, where you started out as Raiden. The one on the harddifficulty settings always move around the room, usually in thecaged area under the stairs or behind the computer controls.
Hint: Collecting claymore mines:
Get near claymore mines, then get into a prone positionover them. The claymores will be placed into your inventory
Hint: Coolant defense:
When you are bombarded by guards, do not immediatelyshoot them. Take out the Coolant spray that Stillman gave youat the start of the game. Spray the Coolant at them and they willprotect their faces. While they are doing that. Use the opportunityto shoot the guards and run.
Hint: Bug splatter:
In the Shell 2, B1 after retrieving Emma, go to theelevator. Plant a C4 in the middle of the bugs crawling aroundon the floor. Walk a short distance away and enter first personview. Detonate the C4. If done correctly, bugs should splatterall over Raiden's face.
Hint: Fire extinguishers:
If you shoot a fire extinguisher and are too close,your character will cough and your health will decrease.
Hint: Rubber duck:
You can find a rubber duck in the water floating inthe basement of Shell 2 Core (under the hard difficulty setting).On the way to find Emma, at the second air pocket just beforethe hallway with two mines, there will be a little yellow rubberduck floating.
Hint: Hostage comments:
In B1 of the Shell 1 core, where all the hostages arefound, you can get a good laugh by pointing the directional mic.at every hostage except for Ames and pressing Action. Somewill be scared, some will get angry, others will simply turn theirhead away, and some may have something interesting to say. Youwill eventually find Jennifer, the secret service agent Snakerescued in the "A Wrongdoing" Snake Tale. It is recommendthat you have stealth equipped while tying this, as the more racketyou cause the more guards will be called in to patrol the area.
Hint: Scared woman:
In Shell 1 Core: Main Hall, go to the flag pole. Putthe D Mic up and press [Action] near the woman. Raidenshould ask her if she is Ames. Look at her and the floor nearher to see that it starts turning yellow.
Hint: Exploding poster:
When walking through the engine room, you will eventuallyfind yourself underneath a Russian guard that is standing on aledge hanging above you. If you watch his pattern, you will noticethat he is using binoculars to look at the wall. Look around thewall behind you. You will notice that he is looking at anotherone of the pictures of the Japanese girls. While he is lookingat it, shoot it with one of your weapons (preferably the silencedUSP if available). When you shoot it, it explodes. Note: Doingthis sends you into alert mode; be prepared for the backups.
Hint: Kissing poster:
When playing as Raiden in the big shell, find the ShellOne mess hall. Enter the men's restroom. There will be a girlieposter on door of the stall on the left. Get in that stall andclose the door. Enter first person mode and zoom in on the poster.Raiden will make a kissing noise.
Hint: Masked Snake:
When Emma is crossing the oil fence, look with yourPSG-1 sniper rifle. Snake will have a green mask on his face.
Hint: Emma and Snake's funny comments:
When Emma is walking on the oil fence and Snake isin his sniper position, take your Directional Mic and point itat both of them.
Hint: Snake falls down stairs:
Use the following trick to make Solid Snake fall onthe stairs. Do a barrel roll by running and pressing Anear some steps. Make sure you land on the steps. Snake will falland become unconscious momentarily.
Hint: Collecting dog tags:
Use this trick to collect dog tags from nearly allguards. The only drawback is that it may take some time, dependingon where you are in the mission; knocking out all other nearbyguards before starting and targeting reporting guards last isrecommended. If you cannot get close enough to a guard to demandhis dog tags without being spotted, begin by tranquilizing himfrom a distance. Run to where he falls. Pick him up from the shouldersto make sure he is facing up. Position yourself so that you arestanding in line with his head (but not literally on top of him).Also, make sure that when he stands up there is enough room infront of him that you can run around and demand his dog tags.When he starts to get up, equip you M9. The moment he reachesa standing position, hold him up. The guard will not have timeto turn around and see your character. To wake up guards faster,use either the Coolant Spray technique outlined elsewhere or propthe guard against a wall (feet first, preferably), enter firstperson view, and punch at the highest part of his body. Both wayswill get them up faster, but make sure you are in a good positionto hold them up in case they wake up faster than expected. Thistechnique also works well to salvage failed attempts (i.e. youwere spotted, panicked, and tranquilized him, which is a goodreason never to have your USP or Socom equipped when first holdingsomeone up as you do not risk panicking and killing the guardby accident.)
Hint: Get Hideo Kojima's dog tag:
Play the game on extreme mode. When you meet Snakein Arsenal Gear Ascending Colon to get your things back, knockhim out. Unequip your weapon, drag him, and he will drop HideoKojima's dog tag.

In the Tanker chapter in Hold No. 2 where the Marinesare located, take a picture of the right screen with the camerathat Snake uses to photograph RAY. A face will flash on the screenwhen you take the picture. If you upload the photo for Otacon'sviewing, he will be scared. The face is Hideo Kojima, the creatorof the Metal Gear series.
Hint: Single punch knockout:
To knock out an enemy with a single punch, sneak upbehind them. You can also hold them up if desired. Get as closeas you can without touching them, then click the Left Analog-stickto enter first person view. Then, press A to crouch (notprone), aim for their groin, and punch. They will go down in onehit. This technique is useful because it does not make as muchsound as a three or four hit combo.
Hint: Hold up mode:
Aim anywhere at the enemy and he will raise his armsand make a shocked sound. Click the Left Analog-stick toenter first person view and aim at his head. A guard will nothear you if you are in hold up mode. If you shoot twice, a guardnearby is more likely to hear you.
Hint: Wake up a guard in sneaking mode:
While Ninja Raiden is in sneaking mode, walk up toa unconscious guard and click Left Analog-stick to enterfirst person view. Click and hold Right Analog-stick tosend a thrust (stab) into the enemy's head. This will wake himup. Kill the guard and hide his body so the other soldiers willnot find it.
While Raiden is in sneaking mode, walk up to a unconscious guardand click Left Analog-stick to enter first person view.Aim at the enemy's head, then keep punching him. This will wakehim up. Kill the guard or he will call for back up. Hide his bodyso the other soldiers will not find it.
Hint: Panicked guard:
Go to an area where there is only one soldier (suchas the Strut E heliport). Shoot the soldier with the tranquilizer.Next, shoot him with the SOCOM gun in the arm. Take out your tranquilizerand shoot his radio so he cannot use it. Wake him up by sprayinghim with Coolant. When he wakes up, run and hide somewhere fora few seconds. After that, run in front of him. He will be alertedand try to radio in. After two attempts to radio in, he will runto find another comrade to help.
Hold up a guard. Afterwards, shoot him in the arm, the leg, thenhis radio. Stand in front of him and disarm you weapon. He willattempt to call for help, then helplessly limp away.
Hint: Knock out guard with cigarette:
Have Snake or Raiden put a cigarette in his mouth.Then, hold up an enemy and move as close as possible to him. Hewill start to cough. After he coughs about four or five times,he will fall and become stunned.
Hint: Guard with red eyes:
Whenever you kill a guard and shoot his eyes, theynormally will not get bloody. However, there is a guard in thePlant chapter where this does not happen. After you have defeatedthe Harrier you will proceed to a path on the side of one Shell.You should find a guard on the roof that urinates off of it. Useyour silenced AK to shoot him down. This is very difficult, butyou can have a chance to shoot his head when he speaks about hisurge to urinate. If you miss the first time, shoot the wall underhim. He will walk to the noise, then return and begin talkingagain, giving you another chance. When he falls, approach hiscorpse and shoot his eyes, which still will be open. They willhave blood in them.
Hint: Choking enemies:
A silent and reliable method for knocking out an enemyis to choke them until they lose consciousness. However, thistechnique has an extremely high chance of "accidental death"due to the enemy's neck breaking. It takes eleven chokes includingthe initial grab to eliminate the enemy. Therefore, choking theenemy nine to ten times will result in the enemy being "knockedout".
Hint: Domino effect with guards:
In the holds, stand next to any guard and do the punch,punch, kick combo. They will go flying, knocking down almost halfof the guards. Also grab the guards by the projectors and holdthem up. Then, do the combo for longer distance.
Hint: Bird droppings:
Complete the Tanker chapter with Snake. After that,get to the roof with Raiden. You will see a group of birds. Shootone with the M9. The rest of the birds will fly around. If yousee one go directly above your head, it should send some droppingson you. You have to be in first person view. The bird droppingswill also come off the screen when you go back to third personview.
Hint: More air and grip:
To make your O2 or GRIP gauge decrease slower, makesure you have full health. Use Rations to restore your healthif needed.
Hint: Quick Elimination missions:
When in Elimination missions for Snake, Raiden, oranyone with a gun, sneak up behind the enemy and hold. Your characterwill yell "Freeze". Click the Left Analog-stickto enter person view. Aim for his head to take him out. This willsave bullets. If you aim for the head with a M9 to knock out aenemy, quickly shoot the head and he will fall asleep. It willcount as killing him.
Hint: Codec comments:
When playing as Raiden in the Plant chapter, go intostrut C after the intermission sequence where Vamp kills the SEALS.Go into the women's bathroom, open a stall, then go into firstperson view. Look at the toilet. This may require a few timesattempts. Call the colonel and he and Rose will be mad at youand Rose will not let you save the game. You can also go intothe men's bathroom and call the colonel when looking at the urinaland he will excuse Rose.
When on the Plant chapter, after getting the Stinger Missilesfind an area where there are seagulls . Lock on one of them andfire a missile. The colonel and Rose will call you on the Codecwith a funny message.
When playing as Snake in the Tanker chapter, knock out an enemythen take a picture of him sleeping. This also works when youare being chased by the big heavy people with shotguns and takea picture of them. After you have the picture and put them intothe computer, Otacon will say that this is not a game.
Hint: Snake Tales: Skip text faster:
Whenever you play a Snake Tale, there will be textinstead of intermission sequences. When this happens, you canskip the text faster by holding Y. When the pages reachthe end, press A to end the text sequence.
Hint: VR Missions: Save time:
When you are using Ninja and HF Blade, do a verticalslash and hold the Right Analog-stick in position and donot allow it to re-center. This puts your sword in a samurai stance,or Raiden will hold it up. When in this stance, you can completelyrun on stairs, instead of slowly tiptoeing up, which saves a littlebit of time.
Hint: VR Missions: Defeating Genola:
When you play the VR Missions as Metal Gear Solid1 Snake, you will have to fight Genola. To defeat him, simplyaim the Stinger Missile Launcher up and look for a lock-on square.Lock on to it and shoot a missile. When it hits, Mech Genola willappear and defeat Genloa.
Hint: Snake Tales (External Gazer): Gettaken away by Gurlugon:Hint: Snake Tales (External Gazer): Gurlugonkills himself:
On Raiden's seventh variety mission in VR mode, whenyou fight Gurlugon, equip the enemy uniform and the AK and letGurlugon attack you. He will stop the attack and fall in lovewith you. He picks you up and leaves with Raiden, and Raiden triesto get free. Note: This counts as a mission failure, but is funnyto watch.
When playing through Raiden's variety VR missions andyou reach Gurlugon, hide behind the tall box on the left closestto Gurlugon. When the box is destroyed, a magazine appears. Gurlugonwill go crazy and ends up killing himself. This counts as a successin the VR mission.
